Angelo Soliman – ein schwarzer Sklave, Kammerdiener, Freimaurer und Museumexponat

Abstract

Angelo Soliman (c. 1721–1796), born in sub-Saharan Africa and ensclaved as a child, was sold to a Sicilian family. He entered in the service of Prince J. G. Lobkowicz, from 1753 he lived in Vienna, where he was chamberlein in the household of Prince Liechtenstein. A freemason, he had enjoyed a distinguished career in the enlightened circles of the capital. Nevertheless, he was post-humously displayed in a museum as a half-naked “savage”.
