Abstract

The port of Rotterdam is the biggest sea port in Europe. It lies on the bank of the Rhine River and the coast of the North Sea. The first part of the port of Rotterdam was built in the city centre of Rotterdam. The terminals of the port started to build to the coast of the North Sea in the length 40 kilometres due to the increase of transfer of cargo and the expansion of the city. In 2008 a new part of the port Maasvlakte 2 started to build on an artificial peninsula. This part of the port which is designed for the latest generation of container ships will consist of container terminals and areas for chemical industry and distribution.
